Critique

Thank you to all the members who chose me to Judge our 25th Anniversary show. It should have been a great honour for me and one I was looking forward to. However the expectations of some people have marred my celebration of this great clubs landmark.

The Breed has come a long way since 1979 when Harlequin was first shown at Cruft’s where he came 2nd in AV Open Dog. Little did I know then the impact he would have and that I would be here thirty years later giving my opinion on this lovely breed, a breed that I have loved and still love even though I now only have my Greek rescue ‘R & W’ dogs and my cats.

Now, there are dogs not only winning and being placed in Groups, but Best in Shows as well. A great credit to breeders and owners. But, I sometimes wonder if, to have the title of Champion can sometimes be at some cost to the breed. To keep a breed stronger we must not just choose the owners or in some cases the dogs that are winning but we must look at the Pedigree that suits your Bitch and the Breeds future breeding.

It is easy to forget just the type of dog the Irish Red & White Setter should be. The dog is bred for working and where possible we should try and keep that in mind. He is a beautiful dog but in some cases he is becoming very similar to his counterpart the Irish Red Setter.

Where in the future there may be more outcrosses to ensure that we keep the working bloodlines, the responsibility should be on the Clubs who are the custodians of the bread to insure that if this does happen, there must be a common bond between all members and committees of all the clubs in England, Ireland and overseas, to discuss it first or it will be to the detriment of the breed.

We had a very pleasant weekend and I am sure a lot of work went into it, to make it as enjoyable as possible. It was very nice to meet friends with the same interest as myself, but as we had a full day of very informative lectures we did not get much time to share our opinions. In any small breed where everyone knows one another and as I was judging the next day, it was not considered appropriate for me to talk to anyone who may show under me. However I only ever judge the dogs on the day.

I was very sad that I could not watch the Parade of Champions which took place during the break in judging, this spoiled the day for me. It would have been very nice to have seen the dogs who have given our breed recognition. But it was considered inappropriate for me to see them. I did however hear the cheers from a distance, but also missed out on the lovely Cake and Champagne.

I had a super entry of very well turned out dogs and I would like to thank all of you who showed under me for my opinion. These are some of my comments which may be of some interest –

There were a number of incorrect bites and also some heads which were a little heavy, tending towards pear shaped. Some a little long in the foreface and some with very little stop. I would like to see more dogs with a softer expression in the eye as once we lose the softness, it will be very hard to get it back. Movement on some occasions was very erratic with some moving very close behind. There were also some with splayed feet. And a number of low tail sets which spoiled the towline. Colour, which has been the focus of lots of contention for a very long time, for me is only part of the make-up of the dog. But while we strive to get clear Red and White, we must remember that the colour red should be like a freshly opened Chestnut and the white, a soft pearl white.

We had a very nice day but even for me, it was very warm. Also many thanks to my stewards, Dave & Sue Folds for looking after me so well and for their lovely gift. And to the Chairman, Mr Bob Knapton who tried unsuccessfully to get everyone together after the show.

Thank you once again for a very memorable weekend and sadly I did not get a chance to say goodbye to the committee as after the show people drifted away very quickly. I hope the winners enjoyed their day and for those who did not, I am sure there will be many more shows. Just remember it is not the winning that is important, but the taking part.
